The Los Angeles Lakers opened the 2026 NBA Playoffs with a 117-107 victory over the Houston Rockets on April 18 at Crypto.com Arena, overcoming their underdog status and the absence of multiple All-Stars on both sides.
Center Deandre Ayton, making his Lakers postseason debut, produced 19 points, 11 rebounds and two assists while shooting 8-for-10 from the field. Afterward, the 6-foot-11 big man said the win was important but only one step in the best-of-seven series.
“We did our job,” Ayton told reporters. “We have home court and that’s our job. We’re not going to take this for granted.”
Los Angeles entered the matchup without injured guards Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, while Houston was forced to sit Kevin Durant. Capitalizing on the short-handed Rockets, the Lakers established an early lead and maintained control to move ahead 1-0 in the first-round set.
Coaching Staff’s Confidence
Head coach JJ Redick has repeatedly emphasized Ayton’s role in the team’s postseason plans. The 25-year-old center said that support fueled his Game 1 performance.
“I could feel the trust JJ had in me all week,” Ayton explained. “That confidence does a lot for an NBA player. I tried to show I’m ready by staying consistent in practice, and I couldn’t wait to beat up on somebody else.”
Ayton acknowledged minor defensive issues, including early foul trouble, but noted the club matched Houston’s physical play long enough to secure the finish.
Looking Ahead to Game 2
The Lakers can take a 2-0 series lead with another home win in Game 2. Ayton, who faced regular-season criticism for inconsistent effort, said maintaining intensity remains the priority.
“It’s the playoffs,” he said. “We need to keep the same energy.”
