The Los Angeles Lakers opened the 2026 NBA Playoffs with a 107-98 victory over the Houston Rockets on April 18 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Both teams entered Game 1 shorthanded. Los Angeles remained without leading scorers Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, each still recovering from injuries, while Houston ruled out Kevin Durant shortly before tip-off. The Lakers exploited the matchup to claim a 1-0 edge in the best-of-seven first-round series.
Early ball movement sets the tone
The hosts jumped to a 10-4 start as all five Laker starters scored on the opening possessions. LeBron James orchestrated the offense, handing out seven assists in the first seven minutes, yet Houston trailed only 33-29 after one quarter thanks to timely shooting by Jabari Smith Jr.
Fouls keep Houston close before halftime
Los Angeles built the lead to double digits early in the second period after a Marcus Smart-to-Deandre Ayton alley-oop. Frequent fouls, however, sent the Rockets to the free-throw line repeatedly, trimming the gap to 50-48 at intermission.
James sparks third-quarter surge
Reed Sheppard opened the second half with a three-pointer that briefly put Houston in front, but James answered with consecutive inside buckets to ignite a 15-5 run. The Rockets collected two technical fouls while the Lakers spent much of the quarter in the bonus, yet Los Angeles converted only enough free throws to lead 75-66 after three.
Fourth-quarter cushion holds
Rui Hachimura hit back-to-back midrange jumpers early in the final period, and Luke Kennard followed with consecutive threes, extending the margin to 16. Houston trimmed the deficit to nine in the closing minutes, but Ayton’s floater ended the comeback bid and secured the win.

Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. PT, again at Crypto.com Arena. The matchup will air on NBC and Peacock.
