The Golden State Warriors’ season ended with Friday’s play-in defeat to the Phoenix Suns, and league insiders already anticipate an eventful summer in San Francisco.
While most executives expect Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, head coach Steve Kerr, Jimmy Butler (once healthy) and possibly Kristaps Porzingis to remain in place for another run, front-office conversations are intensifying around potential roster changes, according to The Athletic’s Nick Friedell and Marcus Thompson II.
Green’s contract viewed as the club’s most movable
With Jonathan Kuminga’s deal off the books, team officials now see Green’s salary as the franchise’s easiest to include in sizable trade packages, the report states. Any pursuit of a high-priced target would likely begin with the four-time All-Star forward, whose defensive presence continues to rank among the league’s best.
The Warriors have already parted ways with longtime core member Klay Thompson, and sources told The Athletic the front office could adopt a similar approach with Green if a major acquisition becomes available.
Uncertainty around Steve Kerr’s future
Kerr, who is entering the final year of his contract, remains a priority for ownership, and both Curry and Green have voiced support for his return. Even so, league sources informed Hoops Wire that the 58-year-old coach is considering a sabbatical that could see him rejoin the broadcast booth.
Golden State is expected to tweak its roster at minimum; substantial changes are also on the table as the franchise weighs immediate competitiveness against long-term planning.
