CHICAGO — The Chicago Bulls and guard Josh Giddey have reached agreement on a four-year, $100 million contract extension, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday.

The deal removes the 6-foot-8 playmaker from the restricted free-agent market and secures him as Chicago’s primary point guard ahead of league-wide training camps, which open at month’s end.

First major restricted free agent to reach a deal

Giddey is the first prominent restricted free agent to finalize an extension this offseason. Brooklyn’s Cam Thomas accepted a qualifying offer, while Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga and Philadelphia’s Quentin Grimes remain unsigned.

Strong Year 1 numbers in Chicago

In 2023-24, his first season with the Bulls, Giddey averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.6 blocks. He shot 46.5 percent from the field, 37.8 percent from three and 78.1 percent at the line, tallying 30 double-doubles and seven triple-doubles.

Following the All-Star break and the trade of All-Star guard Zach LaVine, Giddey’s production jumped to 21.2 points, 10.7 rebounds and 9.3 assists while hitting 50 percent of his shots and 46 percent of his threes. He played through a muscle tear in his right palm during that stretch.

Career overview

Set to turn 23 in October, the Australian guard owns career marks of 14.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.1 assists across his time with the Thunder and Bulls.

The extension positions Giddey as a cornerstone for a Chicago roster looking to rebound in the 2024-25 campaign.
