The Miami Heat officially released veteran guard Terry Rozier on Friday, creating an opening on the 15-man roster just days before the regular season ends.
The decision, first noted by Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, had been anticipated since ESPN’s Shams Charania reported weeks ago that Miami intended to cut ties with Rozier before the postseason.
Rozier, 32, has not played this season. He was arrested in October as part of a federal investigation into illegal gambling and later pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The Heat kept him through February’s trade deadline, hoping his $26.6 million expiring contract might facilitate a deal, but no trade materialized.
With the play-in tournament approaching and Rozier unavailable, Miami chose to remove him from the roster. The move leaves the club with one vacant spot, which could be used to elevate a two-way player—Jahmir Young, Vladislav Goldin or Trevor Keels—to a standard NBA contract. None of the trio has logged significant minutes this year.
The Heat have until Sunday to submit their final 15-man roster for postseason eligibility.
