Heat routed by Raptors, locked into play-in for fourth straight season

The Miami Heat will once again have to navigate the NBA play-in tournament after falling 121-95 to the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night, a result that eliminated any chance of finishing among the Eastern Conference’s top six seeds.

The defeat dropped Miami to 0-3 against Toronto this season and ensured the franchise’s fourth consecutive trip to the play-in, matching the most appearances by any team since the format was introduced six seasons ago (seven if including the 2020 bubble play-in game). Only Atlanta and Golden State have also reached the event four times.

“We’re disappointed, for sure, that we weren’t able to bring another level of competitive spirit to this,” head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We’re not thinking about the next step right now.”

History of survival

Miami has advanced through the play-in on each prior visit, claiming the No. 8 seed every time. Last season, the Heat entered as the No. 10 seed and won two road games to clinch a playoff berth. They went 1-1 in 2024 and 1-1 in 2023, the latter run sparking an improbable journey to the NBA Finals, where they lost to Denver in five games.

Struggles against contenders

Tuesday’s loss dropped the Heat to 13-20 this season against the East’s other nine postseason-bound clubs. Spoelstra acknowledged the shortfall: “We have a spirit. Our guys bounce back. But we have to rise to the level of the competition. That’s the bottom line right now. We have these opportunities to meet our competition and we come up short.”

The Raptors’ victory officially cemented Miami’s play-in destiny; dates and opponents will be determined when the regular season concludes.
