San Antonio Spurs rookie center Victor Wembanyama did not return for the second half of Monday’s matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers after suffering a left rib contusion, the team confirmed during the game.
The injury occurred in the first half when the 7-foot-4 standout fell to the floor. He logged 16 minutes before leaving, recording 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks while the Spurs outscored Philadelphia by seven during his time on the court.
Because he reached the 16-minute mark, the appearance counts toward the NBA’s 65-game minimum required for postseason award eligibility. Wembanyama already has one other shortened game of 17 minutes that qualifies, meaning he needs to play at least 20 minutes in just one of San Antonio’s final three contests to secure eligibility for honors.
The 20-year-old Frenchman is widely viewed as the frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year and a likely All-NBA selection. He has also garnered consideration as a possible MVP finalist.
With the regular season entering its final week, attention now turns to Wembanyama’s recovery timetable.
