The Cleveland Cavaliers and seven-time All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell have reached agreement on a four-year maximum contract extension valued at an estimated $272.8 million, agent Austin Brown told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The new pact replaces Mitchell’s player option for 2027/28 and will begin that season at 35 percent of the projected $174 million salary cap, with 8 percent raises each year. The deal includes a 15 percent trade bonus and a player option for the 2030/31 campaign.

Projected salary breakdown

2027/28: $60.9 million
2028/29: $65.772 million
2029/30: $70.644 million
2030/31: $75.516 million (player option)

Mitchell, 29, is coming off one of his strongest seasons, averaging 27.9 points, 5.7 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals over 70 games in 2025/26. He shot 48.3 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from three-point range and 86.5 percent at the foul line, earning All-NBA Second Team honors and finishing seventh in MVP voting.

The guard arrived in Cleveland via trade from Utah in 2022 and previously signed a three-year max extension with the Cavaliers in 2024. After leading the club to its first conference-final appearance this spring, Mitchell told reporters he enjoyed playing in Cleveland and believed the team could contend for a title.

Charania reports that Mitchell has been involved in roster discussions with the front office and has backed the team’s offseason direction. Cleveland’s summer activity to date includes selecting guard Meleek Thomas 34th overall in the draft and re-signing reserve center Thomas Bryant to a minimum deal. The organization is expected to pursue new contracts for backcourt partner James Harden and explore a possible reunion with LeBron James.

The extension locks Mitchell in through at least 2029/30, giving the Cavaliers a long-term foundation around their star guard.
