DETROIT — Center Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons say they want the same thing: a career that keeps the 22-year-old big man in a Pistons uniform for good.
Duren, who declined a rookie-scale extension before the 2025–26 season, will enter restricted free agency this summer. Speaking to The Ringer, he said last year’s negotiations stalled strictly over contract terms, not commitment.
“I would love to be a Piston for life,” Duren told the outlet. “They felt one way, I felt another, and at that moment we couldn’t come to an agreement.”
Breakout season boosts value
The former lottery pick has raised his market price with a standout fourth year. He is averaging 19.5 points and 10.3 rebounds, earned his first All-Star selection and anchors a 55-21 team that tops the Eastern Conference. Detroit owns a +12.0 net rating when he plays and a –4.3 mark when he sits.
Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff credited offseason work designed to expand Duren’s responsibilities. “He can be a hub that you can play through,” Bickerstaff said, while also praising his rim protection and rebounding.
Growing leadership role
Veteran wing Javonte Green and reserve center Paul Reed have noticed Duren’s emergence as a locker-room voice. Duren said the role developed organically: “I like to bring guys together. I’m serious when I need to be serious.”
Front office on the same page
General manager Trajan Langdon echoed the player’s sentiment about a long-term partnership. “We want him to be a Piston for life, too,” Langdon said, calling last offseason’s impasse a routine business decision.
Duren’s breakout now points toward a maximum-salary deal, and rival teams are expected to monitor his restricted free agency. Both sides, however, insist their priority is a contract that keeps him in Detroit well beyond 2026.
