Toronto, ON — Long-time NBA executive Masai Ujiri has become a member of the ownership group backing the forthcoming WNBA franchise in Toronto, according to Hoops Wire. While committing to the new venture, he is said to be keeping the door open for a future return to an NBA front-office role.

The report did not disclose financial terms of Ujiri’s stake or specify what day-to-day responsibilities he will assume with the WNBA club. It also noted that, despite his involvement on the women’s side, he remains attentive to opportunities that could draw him back to the NBA ranks.

Toronto was officially awarded a WNBA expansion team earlier this year, making it the league’s first franchise based outside the United States. The club is scheduled to begin play once league logistics and venue details are finalized.

Ujiri most recently served as vice-chairman and president of the Toronto Raptors, overseeing the organization that captured its first NBA championship in 2019.
