Former Dallas Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban acknowledged second thoughts about the people who bought the franchise from him, saying on the “Intersections” podcast that he is unhappy with selling the club to Miriam Adelson and Las Vegas Sands chief executive Patrick Dumont.

I don’t regret selling. I regret who I sold to,” Cuban said in a teaser clip released Monday on Instagram. “I made a lot of mistakes in the process, and I’ll leave it at that.”

Sale Details and Current Ownership

Cuban transferred control of the Mavericks in December 2023, unloading the majority of his shares to Adelson and her son-in-law Dumont. Despite retaining 27 percent of the franchise, Cuban discovered he had no contractual authority to remain the lead basketball decision-maker, a role he publicly expected to keep at the time of the sale. Dumont has served as the team’s governor since the transaction closed.

Declining Influence

According to The Athletic’s Christian Clark, Cuban’s sway inside the organization diminished sharply by February 2025, when Dumont approved trading All-NBA guard Luka Doncic. Former general manager Nico Harrison—originally hired by Cuban and dismissed by Dumont in November—reportedly conducted the trade talks.

Team Performance and Presence

Cuban continues to attend most home games, Clark reported. The Mavericks are 24-50, owning the NBA’s sixth-worst record.

Why Cuban Sold

Speaking with podcast hosts Tom Leppert and Kyle Waldrep, Cuban said operating an NBA franchise required an emotional investment he no longer wanted to shoulder, especially with his children growing up.

“Now imagine going up and down like that every single game. That’s hard,” he explained. “My kids … maybe they want to work at the Mavs, and I didn’t want that for them. If fans don’t like what you’re doing … you’re the worst human being on the planet, and they treat you that way.”
