As the San Antonio Spurs prepare for the 2025-26 campaign, team beat writer Jeff McDonald told The Houston Chronicle that the franchise would label the year a success by pushing its win total into the 40s and securing at least a play-in berth—if not a top-eight spot in the Western Conference postseason field.
Health of No. 1 pick remains pivotal
McDonald emphasized that San Antonio’s fortunes hinge on Victor Wembanyama, who missed the final three months of last season because of a blood clot. The 7-foot-4 center has not appeared in a game since February and skipped the ongoing EuroBasket tournament, yet Marc Stein reported that Wembanyama recently logged full-court workouts at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and “looked quite stellar.”
Key factors beyond Wembanyama
A full year from mid-season trade acquisition De’Aaron Fox, continued growth from reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and an encouraging debut season for lottery pick Dylan Harper are also viewed as critical components of a playoff push, McDonald said.
First glimpse may come in early October
The Spurs announced their annual open scrimmage at Frost Bank Center for Oct. 4. While participation is not guaranteed, the event could mark Wembanyama’s first on-court appearance in nearly eight months.
Sochan extension decision looms
In a separate Substack piece, Paul Garcia examined whether San Antonio should extend forward Jeremy Sochan before the Oct. 20 rookie-scale deadline or wait until the summer of 2026, when the former first-round pick can enter restricted free agency.
