Mavericks Still Weighing Options After Jon Scheyer Signals He Will Remain at Duke

The Dallas Mavericks’ coaching vacancy remains open after indications that Duke head coach Jon Scheyer plans to stay in Durham, veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein wrote on The Stein Line.
According to Stein, Dallas gave Scheyer “every conceivable opportunity” to consider jumping to the NBA before pushing ahead with other options. Scheyer coached forward Cooper Flagg during Flagg’s lone season at Duke; the Mavericks selected Flagg No. 1 overall in last year’s draft, prompting speculation that the two could reunite in the NBA.
Despite that connection, league insiders have long been skeptical that Scheyer would leave Duke, and that sentiment has not changed, Stein noted. He added that Michigan head coach Dusty May is likewise expected to remain in the college ranks through at least the 2026-27 season.
With those college coaches unlikely to move, the Mavericks are focused on a group that reportedly includes Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori, Houston Rockets assistant Royal Ivey, Toronto Raptors assistant Jama Mahlalela and former Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts.
Nori’s profile has risen sharply; Stein recently named him a leading candidate for both the Mavericks and the Trail Blazers openings.
Dallas dismissed Jason Kidd a month ago and has not yet named a successor. The NBA Draft is now only days away, putting added urgency on the search.
