Ronald Nored is leaving the Atlanta Hawks’ bench to take over Butler University’s men’s basketball program, the school announced Wednesday. The hiring was first reported by Matt Norlander of CBS Sports.

“The term ‘dream job’ doesn’t do justice to how I feel about the opportunity to lead the Butler program,” Nored said in a statement released by the university. “Passionate fans, Hinkle Fieldhouse, the BIG EAST, a storied tradition — there is incredible momentum at Butler right now, and I can’t wait to hit the ground running.”

Nored, 34, has spent the past three seasons on Quin Snyder’s staff in Atlanta. His NBA résumé also includes stops with the Indiana Pacers (2021-23), Charlotte Hornets (2018-21) and Boston Celtics (2014-15), where he worked in player development under former Butler coach Brad Stevens.

The new post is not Nored’s first head-coaching assignment. He led the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G League affiliate, from 2016 to 2018.

A four-year starter at point guard for Butler from 2008 to 2012, Nored helped guide the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championship game appearances in 2010 and 2011. He succeeds Thad Matta, who announced his retirement last week. According to multiple sources, Nored and Akron head coach John Groce were the two finalists for the position.

Butler plans to introduce Nored at a Friday afternoon news conference. The university did not clarify whether he will depart the Hawks immediately or remain with the NBA club through the end of the season.
