The 76ers will face former teammate Jared McCain for the first time since trading him to the Thunder, when Oklahoma City visits Philadelphia tonight. While the second-year guard remains popular in the Sixers’ locker room, players are expecting a highly competitive matchup.
“Jared McCain’s about to try to come kill us,” forward Trendon Watford said.
McCain’s new role in Oklahoma City
McCain, moved at last month’s trade deadline for a package that included a 2026 first-round pick originally owned by Houston, has become a key reserve for the defending champions. He is averaging 12.3 points and shooting 44% from three-point range off the bench. The deal also helped Philadelphia avoid the luxury tax.
The former No. 16 overall pick appeared in just 23 games as a rookie before knee and thumb surgeries ended his season. After recovering, he struggled to find minutes in a crowded Sixers backcourt and logged two brief assignments with the G League’s Delaware Blue Coats.
“That’s our dog. Everyone still loves Jared,” rookie wing VJ Edgecombe said. “I’m just happy to see him hooping.”
Barlow sprains ankle
Philadelphia’s injury list grew Saturday when backup big man Dominick Barlow left the game in Utah with a sprained left ankle. X-rays were negative, and he walked out of the arena without a protective boot, but he is listed as doubtful for tonight.
Edgecombe vs. Bailey
Saturday’s meeting with the Jazz also marked the first NBA matchup between Edgecombe and Ace Bailey. The Sixers selected Edgecombe third overall last June after debating between the two prospects. Both players have shown promise; Edgecombe is enjoying an impressive rookie campaign, while Bailey’s production has increased with more playing time. The pair became friends during the pre-draft process but never discussed the No. 3 selection.
Embiid progressing
Joel Embiid will miss his sixth straight contest with a right oblique strain, yet there is encouraging news. The All-Star center has resumed on-court workouts, and although he continues to experience pain, the team reports no setbacks. Embiid has played 33 games this season and has been sidelined since February 26.
