The Los Angeles Lakers opened a six-game road trip on Monday night by outlasting the Houston Rockets, 100-92, at Toyota Center. The result stretched Los Angeles’ winning run to six games and gave the club a narrow edge over Houston in the race for the Western Conference’s No. 3 seed.

Houston struck first behind Kevin Durant and built a 9-4 cushion, but the visitors responded quickly. A transition dunk from LeBron James off an Austin Reaves feed set the tone for a 9-2 surge keyed by Luka Dončić. The guard, fresh off earning Western Conference Player of the Week honors, poured in 16 first-quarter points as the Lakers carried a 29-28 advantage into the second period.

The momentum shifted when Jake LaRavia’s energy on the glass helped Houston reclaim control. The Rockets, the NBA’s top offensive-rebounding team, punished L.A. inside and moved in front, 57-51, by halftime despite a timely three-pointer from Marcus Smart.

Houston’s physical play pushed its lead into double digits early in the third quarter, but James drilled a three and Dončić added five straight points to keep Los Angeles within striking distance. A Flagrant 1 foul on Durant for a shove against Reaves trimmed the gap to two, and the Lakers closed the frame on a defensive surge to lead 83-80.

Both offenses stalled in a rugged fourth quarter. The Lakers blitzed Durant on nearly every touch, and the Rockets generated points almost exclusively through second-chance opportunities. With two minutes left, L.A. finally created separation. Smart buried a corner three and Deandre Ayton followed with consecutive interior buckets to seal the eight-point victory.
