The Cleveland Cavaliers moved veteran wing Max Strus to their G League affiliate for practice on Wednesday, positioning him for a possible return to NBA action as soon as Sunday, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.
Strus practiced with the Cleveland Charge on Wednesday, is expected to join them again on Thursday, and may complete a light workout Friday morning, the report states. Team officials will monitor how his surgically repaired left foot responds before clearing him for game duty.
The 29-year-old underwent surgery in August to repair a Jones fracture and has not played this season. Imaging last week showed “progressive healing,” and Strus has since resumed on-court individual work. Practicing with the Charge was one of the final steps in his rehabilitation plan.
If there are no setbacks, Strus could suit up when the Cavaliers host the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. Should he return, he is expected to be on a minutes restriction for the balance of the regular season.
Over the previous two years in Cleveland, Strus averaged 11.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 42.6% from the field, 36.4% from three-point range and 80.2% at the free-throw line. He appeared in 120 games, starting 107, and logged 29.3 minutes per contest.
