SAN ANTONIO — Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown was ejected in the second quarter of Tuesday night’s 125-116 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs after drawing two technical fouls on the same dead ball.
The incident began when Brown stumbled out of bounds on an offensive possession while being guarded by Spurs rookie point guard Stephon Castle. Convinced he had been pushed, the five-time All-Star argued heatedly with crew chief Tyler Ford as play moved to the other end.
Ford issued the first technical for what he later described as “aggressively pointing and using profanity” in response to the no-call. When Brown continued the confrontation, referee Suyash Mehta assessed a second technical for “aggressively approaching a game official while pointing and using profanity,” resulting in the automatic ejection. The Celtics led 51-49 at the time.
Brown left the floor with 8 points on 4-of-8 shooting, two rebounds, seven assists and one steal in 13 minutes. Players, security staff, head coach Joe Mazzulla and assistant Sam Cassell escorted him to the locker room. The teams went to halftime tied at 58.
Moments after departing, Brown posted on X, “this the s— I be talking about,” continuing a season-long critique of officiating that previously cost him a $35,000 league fine in January.
Mazzulla backed his guard, responding to questions about the ejection with a tongue-in-cheek reference to his high school principal and later saying, “I’ve got his back 100%. I think he was 100% right to be frustrated and do what he did.”
Brown entered the game averaging a team-best 28.7 points along with 7.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists through 57 appearances.
