Two-Way Contract Slots Filled Across NBA As Teams Secure Record Number Of Multiyear Deals

All 90 two-way roster spots around the NBA are now occupied after Wednesday’s signing deadline, leaving every franchise with three two-way players for the remainder of the regular season.
League data show that 31 of those 90 players—more than one-third—are on two-year agreements that run through the 2026/27 campaign, the longest term allowed for a two-way deal. The total marks a jump from 23 such contracts at the close of the 2023/24 season and 26 at the end of 2024/25, putting the league on pace for a new high.
Teams typically prefer the additional season of control because two-way salaries do not count against the salary cap. Early in the league year, when clubs compete for undrafted rookies, players often have enough leverage to insist on single-season contracts. Later in the schedule, however—once most two-way slots are filled—franchises gain leverage, enabling them to secure multiyear commitments from G League call-ups seeking NBA opportunities.
The surge in two-year pacts reflects that shift in bargaining power, although it remains to be seen how much of a competitive edge the extra season of control ultimately provides.
