The Dallas Mavericks have officially re-signed guard Dante Exum to a one-year contract, according to the NBA’s transaction log dated September 1.
The move finalizes an agreement first reported on July 2, when ESPN’s Shams Charania indicated the two sides had reached terms to keep the 30-year-old in Dallas for another season.
To create the necessary cap space and an open roster spot, the Mavericks waived and stretched forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper, a 2023 first-round pick.
Exum, selected fifth overall by Utah in the 2014 draft, spent seven NBA seasons with the Jazz and Cavaliers before heading to Europe from 2021 to 2023. Stints with Barcelona and Partizan Belgrade helped him develop a reliable three-point shot, paving the way for his return to the league with Dallas ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.
Injuries have continued to be a concern—right wrist surgery and a broken left hand limited Exum to 20 appearances last season and 75 over the past two years—but he has produced when available. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 8.0 points, 2.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 19.5 minutes while shooting 51.6 percent from the field and 47.2 percent from beyond the arc.
The Mavericks had to remain below the second tax apron to finalize their offseason signings, including new deals for Kyrie Irving and D’Angelo Russell. Cap expert Yossi Gozlan noted that releasing guard Brandon Williams—whose contract is largely non-guaranteed—would have been the simplest option, but Dallas ultimately freed room by moving on from Prosper.
The one-year agreement keeps Exum in the Mavericks’ backcourt rotation for the 2025-26 season as the club looks to build on last year’s progress when he was healthy.
