USA Team Squanders Big Lead In AmeriCup Semifinals

USA Blows 20-Point Lead, Falls to Brazil in AmeriCup Semifinal

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Team USA allowed a 20-point second-half cushion to evaporate on Saturday, tumbling 92-77 to Brazil in the FIBA AmeriCup semifinals.

The Americans were outscored 34-9 over the final 10 minutes, sending Brazil to its second straight championship game and marking the South American squad’s fourth victory in 11 AmeriCup meetings with the United States.

Forward Bruno Caboclo, who appeared in 105 NBA contests, paced Brazil’s comeback with 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Guard Langston Galloway led the U.S. effort with 22 points, while Javonte Smart contributed 13 points and five assists.

Brazil will face Argentina for the title tonight after Argentina defeated Canada 83-73 in the other semifinal. The United States will meet Canada in the third-place game.
