The Los Angeles Lakers have outlined a long-term strategy focused on Luka Doncic while acknowledging the possibility that LeBron James could leave after this season, team governor Jeanie Buss told CNBC in a recent interview.
Buss spoke one year after the 26-year-old guard signed a three-year, $165 million extension during an Aug. 2, 2025 press conference at the UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo. “The partnership will give us the stability to continue to move forward as we build towards a team around Doncic,” she said. “We couldn’t be more proud that he is a Laker. He is a young All-Star that the fans love to see.”
The organization’s commitment to Doncic follows a busy stretch that included trading Anthony Davis for the Slovenian star and selling the Buss family’s majority stake to Dodgers owner Mark Walter. Buss will continue to serve as governor for at least the next five years.
LeBron’s Next Move Remains Open
James, 41, is in his 23rd NBA season and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Buss praised his performance while conceding that his future is undecided. “Never say never, but he certainly hasn’t given an indication,” she said. “He’s earned the right to decide how his career will go, and he continues to impress.”
