NBA commissioner Adam Silver has formally outlined a “billion-dollar” initiative to create NBA Europe, a new league scheduled to begin play in 2027, according to a Feb. 15, 2026 report by the New York Post.

Silver told the newspaper that the project is designed to expand the NBA’s presence on the continent and capitalize on growing international interest in the sport. Specific details on participating cities, ownership structures and competitive format were not disclosed, but the commissioner said the multi-year timeline will give the league time to finalize agreements with venues, broadcasters and potential team investors.

The 2027 launch marks the NBA’s most ambitious overseas venture to date and reflects the league’s strategy of tapping new markets for both revenue and talent. Silver described the effort as a “game-changer” for basketball’s global footprint and emphasized that it will operate under NBA standards of competition and player development.

The announcement comes amid record international viewership figures and an expanding European fan base for the NBA’s existing operations, including preseason and regular-season games held across the continent in recent years.
