Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic finished the 2025-26 regular season as the NBA’s leading scorer and was widely credited with carrying his team, yet his name was not included when the league revealed its three finalists for the Most Valuable Player award.
The list of contenders, announced earlier this week, did not feature the 27-year-old guard despite his league-best scoring average. Doncic’s exclusion immediately drew attention because individual scoring titles have historically bolstered MVP candidacies.
Doncic, acquired by Los Angeles in a blockbuster trade last offseason, shouldered a heavy offensive load throughout the year. The Lakers relied on his production and late-game heroics to remain in the playoff picture, but the strong campaign was not enough to earn him a spot among the award’s final three.
Under NBA rules, MVP finalists are determined by a global panel of sportswriters and broadcasters who vote at the end of the regular season. Ballots list players in order of preference, and the top three vote-getters are designated as finalists before the overall winner is disclosed during the league’s annual awards announcement.
