LeBron James says rigorous preparation and strict attention to diet have allowed him to remain productive deep into his career. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, the 41-year-old forward explained that he realized as a teenager that poor conditioning was the only thing that could derail his pursuit of greatness. “If I ever reached the league, the only way I wouldn’t become one of the best was if I failed to look after my body,” he told the newspaper.

James, now in his 23rd NBA season, added that early scrimmages against Michael Jordan in Chicago and against the Cavaliers in Cleveland convinced him he belonged at the highest level, but also highlighted the need for constant physical upkeep and film study.

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who served on the Lakers’ staff during the 2020 championship run, applauded James’ resilience after the veteran became the league’s oldest player to register a triple-double earlier this week. “The physical part is impressive, but the toughest thing is the mental side,” Kidd said. “He still wakes up ready to compete against 19- and 20-year-olds, even after championships, MVPs and building a billion-dollar brand.”

Additional Los Angeles notes

Luka Doncic: The Lakers guard is managing a sore hamstring but intends to play in Sunday’s All-Star showcase, according to Marc Stein. Doncic will be on a minutes restriction while representing the World Team in the new three-team format.

Yanic Konan Niederhauser: Clippers rookie center Yanic Konan Niederhauser scored 11 points in Friday’s Rising Stars game and said veterans Ivica Zubac—traded to Cleveland last week—and Brook Lopez have guided his adjustment to the league. “Knowing they’ve got my back and will teach me every day gives me a lot of confidence,” the 30th overall pick from Penn State told the Orange County Register. Niederhauser has appeared in 34 games, averaging 3.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in 9.0 minutes.
