The Washington Wizards announced Thursday that center Alex Sarr is expected to miss approximately two weeks with a hamstring strain, ruling him out of Friday’s Rising Stars game during All-Star Weekend.

Sarr, 20, sat out Wednesday’s loss in Cleveland because of hamstring tightness and also missed last Saturday’s matchup in Brooklyn. Through 41 games in his second NBA season, the 7-footer is averaging 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. He was selected No. 2 overall in the 2024 draft and finished fourth in last season’s Rookie of the Year voting.

The timing of the injury means Sarr will gain an additional week of recovery during the All-Star break. Washington’s next contest is Feb. 19 at home against the Indiana Pacers.

With a 14-39 record—the league’s second worst—the Wizards are prioritizing draft positioning and have little reason to hurry Sarr’s return. The club’s first-round pick is top-eight protected.

Frontcourt depth has been thin for Washington. Tristan Vukcevic missed Wednesday’s game because of illness, forcing the Wizards to deploy an undersized starting unit without a true center. Newly acquired Anthony Davis also sat out amid conflicting reports on whether he will play again this season.

Sarr’s absence is the second major blow to the Rising Stars event in 24 hours; the Dallas Mavericks revealed Wednesday that Cooper Flagg will miss the showcase with a left midfoot sprain.
