The Philadelphia 76ers ruled out center Joel Embiid for Wednesday night’s home game against the New York Knicks as the club continues to manage soreness in his right knee.
Team sources said Embiid felt discomfort after logging 33 points in 33 minutes during Saturday’s victory over the Phoenix Suns. The 30-year-old then missed Monday’s loss in Portland and, despite reduced swelling, will sit again before being re-examined once the NBA pauses for All-Star festivities.
Wednesday marks Philadelphia’s final contest before the league’s mid-season break. Head coach Nick Nurse noted the timing should benefit Embiid, saying, “Anybody that’s a little sore and dinged up can get some treatment for a week and get off their feet for a week, and he’s certainly included in that.”
Embiid has averaged 26.6 points and 7.5 rebounds over 31 appearances this season after limited action the previous two years—19 games last season and 38 the year before—because of various injuries.
The Sixers are already without forward Paul George, who received a 25-game suspension on Jan. 31 for violating the NBA’s anti-drug program. Philadelphia resumes play on Feb. 19, hosting the Atlanta Hawks.
