The Brooklyn Nets officially placed fifth-year guard Cam Thomas on waivers on Thursday, a move required to finish the team’s acquisition of forward Josh Minott.
Thomas, 22, was not moved before the recent trade deadline. Because he accepted his qualifying offer last summer, he held a de facto no-trade clause, limiting Brooklyn’s flexibility and complicating trade talks reportedly involving the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks.
Signs of a separation surfaced earlier in the week when Thomas did not travel with the club to Orlando and was listed out for “personal reasons.” According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the guard’s representatives had asked for a release if no trade materialized, allowing him to pick his next destination.
“Super excited, ready to actually help and contribute to another team,” Thomas told Marc J. Spears of Andscape after learning of the waiver decision.
Known for his scoring ability, Thomas was limited to 24 games this season after appearing in 25 contests the year before because of injuries. Once he clears waivers, he will be free to sign with any team.
