The Los Angeles Lakers started an eight-game road swing with a comeback win over the Denver Nuggets, and the night offered another example of the mutual admiration between two of the NBA’s premier stars.
During the Feb. 22 contest at Ball Arena in Denver, Nuggets center Nikola Jokic remained on the sideline because of injury. Before tip-off, LeBron James approached the three-time MVP, exchanged a quick hug and spoke briefly. Asked afterward on Spectrum SportsNet why he crossed the court, James said it was important to acknowledge a player he considers historically great.
“It’s the utmost respect,” James said. “Jokic is one of the greatest players to ever play this game, so showing that respect is easy for me.”
Olympic thriller still ranks high for James
James and Jokic have met often in recent postseason series, but the Lakers forward pointed to the 2024 Olympic semifinal between Team USA and Serbia as the most memorable clash. In that matchup, James and Stephen Curry spearheaded a fourth-quarter rally that propelled the United States to victory on its path to the gold medal.
“I’ve been in a lot of big games—Finals games, Olympic games, high school games,” James said. “That one sits right at the top.”
Doncic draws praise after All-Star voting
The night also included recognition for another Laker. Luka Doncic finished as the leading vote-getter for this year’s NBA All-Star Game, ending James’s run of 21 consecutive seasons as a starter. James congratulated his teammate for earning the top spot in fan voting.
The Lakers’ victory over Denver gave them an encouraging start to their extended trip, while the brief courtside exchange underscored the continuing respect between two players who have battled frequently on the game’s biggest stages.
