The NBA on Saturday suspended Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schroder for three games after he confronted and attempted to strike Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic following the Kings’ 125-101 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 28 at Crypto.com Arena.

League officials said the altercation began with verbal exchanges during the game. During a timeout, Doncic reportedly mocked Schroder for declining a four-year, $82 million contract extension from the Lakers several seasons ago. Tensions resurfaced roughly 40 minutes after the final buzzer when Schroder emerged from the visitors’ locker room, spotted Doncic in a tunnel near the home bench and advanced toward him.

According to the league’s statement, Schroder told Doncic he could not call him a “b—-” on the court and then act cordially off it, before attempting to swing at the Mavericks guard. Lakers center Deandre Ayton intervened and security quickly separated the players. Schroder was escorted to the Kings’ team bus, while Doncic and his father, Saša, left the arena soon afterward.

Head coach Doug Christie and several Kings players sought clarification as the situation unfolded. No injuries were reported.

Schroder will miss the Kings’ next three contests, including Monday night’s rematch with the Lakers in Sacramento.
