CHICAGO — Center Nikola Vucevic said he anticipates starting the upcoming NBA season with the Chicago Bulls, even as reports circulate that the team could explore a mid-season contract buyout.
Veteran on an Expiring Deal
Vucevic, who will turn 35 in October, is entering the final year of a three-season, $60 million contract. The agreement calls for a $21.48 million salary in 2025-26, according to Spotrac. He is the oldest player remaining on Chicago’s roster.
Front-Office Reshuffle
The Bulls have spent the past year reducing payroll and getting younger. DeMar DeRozan was moved last July, Zach LaVine was dealt during the season, and Lonzo Ball was sent to the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer in exchange for Isaac Okoro.
Rumors of a Buyout
Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer said last month that a buyout for Vucevic appears more plausible than a trade because of limited market interest. “There hasn’t been much of a market for Nikola Vucevic all along, dating back to last trade deadline,” Fischer reported.
Player Expects to Stay
Vucevic addressed the speculation in an interview with Basket USA. “Yes, I have almost no doubt about it. It is in this state of mind that I am preparing,” he said when asked if he expects to play for the Bulls next season. He added that most rumors are “a bit of nonsense” and that he will not worry about situations he cannot control.
Bulls Tenure to Date
Chicago acquired Vucevic from the Orlando Magic in March 2021 for Wendell Carter Jr. and two first-round picks, one of which became Franz Wagner. Last season he appeared in 73 games (72 starts) and averaged 18.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 31.2 minutes while shooting career highs of 53 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from three-point range.
Since his arrival, the Bulls have reached the postseason once. Vucevic said his goal remains to compete for an NBA title.
