Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont has started compiling a list of potential candidates to lead the franchise’s basketball operations after last month’s dismissal of Nico Harrison. According to reporter Marc Stein, Dumont does not expect to fill the position quickly and is comfortable allowing a five-person committee to steer personnel moves through the remainder of the regular season.
That committee features co-interim general managers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi, minority owner Mark Cuban, head coach Jason Kidd, and Dumont himself, who has taken on a larger day-to-day role since Harrison’s exit.
Anthony Davis Decision Looms
The group’s most pressing issue is determining whether to move Anthony Davis before the trade deadline. League sources told Stein a deal is far from certain. Dallas is reluctant to accept an underwhelming return, mindful that last season’s Luka Dončić blockbuster cannot be reversed and wary of compounding past mistakes.
Chicago Monitoring Jonathan Kuminga
The Chicago Bulls have shown little interest in Davis, but they remain intrigued by Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. Chicago previously raised his name in talks that included Alex Caruso and other players, and Stein reports the Bulls are still tracking the 2021 lottery pick.
Hornets Step Back on Chris Paul
The Charlotte Hornets explored acquiring Chris Paul during the offseason, yet the veteran point guard preferred to stay closer to his Los Angeles–based family. Charlotte is no longer expected to pursue him, though Stein notes Paul is now considered more open to destinations outside Southern California. The 38-year-old remains under contract with the Los Angeles Clippers and becomes trade-eligible on Monday.
Pelicans Redefine Untouchable Core
Rookies Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears are currently the New Orleans Pelicans’ most untouchable assets, Stein writes. While Trey Murphy III and Herbert Jones once held that status, New Orleans is now more willing to listen on those wings, but only at a “sky-high” price that effectively discourages suitors.
