LOS ANGELES — After fielding his complete roster for the first time this season, Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said he will not lock himself into a single starting lineup.

LeBron James, who missed the opening stretch with sciatica, returned Tuesday in a home win over the Utah Jazz. Redick opened the game with Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Deandre Ayton and James — the same core that closed many contests last year, minus the newly acquired Ayton in the middle.

“There were stretches that were really good, there were stretches I didn’t think were great,” Redick said of the group. “We’re going to make decisions based on how the team is playing and how the groups work together. I’m not beholden to one thing throughout the season.”

James’ comeback filled the final hole in a roster that had also been without guard Gabe Vincent because of an ankle injury. With the team finally at full strength, Redick suggested the opening quintet could change as matchups, health and performance dictate.

Hachimura’s place in the first unit drew debate during the offseason because of his defense, yet the forward has delivered steady production at both ends. Redick acknowledged that alternatives such as Marcus Smart or Jake LaRavia could slide into the starting five when necessary.

“You think a lot about the starting lineup, but you want to maximize all of your lineup combinations,” Redick said, noting that the closing group often matters more than the one that begins a game.

The Lakers continue their homestand Friday, when Redick will decide whether to stick with Tuesday’s starters or unveil a new look.
