BOSTON — Los Angeles Clippers forward Derrick Jones Jr. was escorted to the locker room with an apparent right knee injury during the second quarter of Sunday’s 121-118 defeat to the Boston Celtics.
The incident occurred as Jones, 28, lunged for a loose ball and collided with a diving Jaylen Brown. Brown’s arm struck Jones’ leg, sending the Clippers starter to the floor clutching his knee. Jones writhed in pain before teammates and staff helped him off the court, placing minimal weight on the injured leg. Brown was assessed a foul on the play.
“We won’t know until he gets reevaluated; we’re not quite sure right now,” head coach Tyronn Lue said afterward.
Injuries have mounted for Los Angeles. Kawhi Leonard missed his seventh straight game Sunday with an ankle and foot sprain, and Bradley Beal was lost for the season with a hip fracture on Nov. 8. “It’s tough,” said guard James Harden, who scored 32 of his 37 points in the second half. “It’s like one after the next. You just try to keep your head on straight, focus on what you can control and come away with wins. Hopefully guys will start coming back sooner than later.”
Jones has started all 13 games this season, averaging 10.9 points.
