MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Former Memphis Grizzlies standout Tony Allen was taken into custody Wednesday in Poinsett County, Arkansas, on two counts of drug possession, authorities said.
The 43-year-old was a passenger in a vehicle stopped on Interstate 555, roughly 50 miles northwest of Memphis. Deputies said the car, driven by William Hatton, 33, of Memphis, was pulled over for undisclosed reasons. A search allegedly uncovered a package of marijuana on Allen and a cigarette box containing cocaine inside the vehicle, according to a report from the Poinsett County Sheriff’s Office.
Allen spent six seasons with the Grizzlies from 2011 to 2017, helping anchor the franchise’s “Core Four” era alongside Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph and Mike Conley. Drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2004 out of Oklahoma State, he closed his NBA career with the New Orleans Pelicans.
In August 2023, Allen pleaded guilty in a federal case tied to an NBA health insurance fraud scheme and received a sentence of community service plus three years’ supervised probation. The Grizzlies retired his No. 9 jersey in March, making him the third member of the Core Four to receive the honor after Gasol and Randolph. Conley is currently with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
