New Orleans, LA — The New Orleans Pelicans announced Monday that forward Zion Williamson has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain in his left hamstring and will be re-evaluated in seven to 10 days.
The timetable rules the 23-year-old out for at least four upcoming games: Tuesday against Charlotte, Wednesday at Dallas, Saturday versus San Antonio, and next Monday against Phoenix. Given his recent injury history, a longer absence has not been ruled out.
Hamstring problems have dogged Williamson in each of the past four seasons. Last year he appeared in only 30 contests while dealing with hamstring and back issues.
Before the latest setback, the former No. 1 overall pick was averaging 22.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals, while leading the league with 11.4 free-throw attempts per game. Despite those numbers, New Orleans has opened the season 0-6.
According to Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, Williamson’s minus-9.0 net rating is among the team’s best marks; without him on the floor, the Pelicans have been outscored by 28.7 points per 100 possessions.
Head coach Willie Green said the focus is on moving forward. “Obviously we’re all disappointed, frustrated with our start,” Green told reporters Monday. “But we continue to come in, work at it and address it.”
