The Memphis Grizzlies are finalizing a hardship exception contract with free-agent center Charles Bassey, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The organization received the temporary roster spot after injuries sidelined Ty Jerome, Zach Edey, Scotty Pippen Jr., and Brandon Clarke. Bassey will become the latest reinforcement as Memphis looks to stabilize its frontcourt rotation.

Bassey, a 6-10 center who turns 25 in two days, is entering his fifth NBA season. Selected 53rd overall in the 2021 draft, he spent his rookie year with the Philadelphia 76ers before logging the last three campaigns in San Antonio. He owns career averages of 4.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in 11.1 minutes per game.

Jock Landale has handled most of the Grizzlies’ minutes at center to open the season. Memphis is 2-1 after victories over the Pacers and Pelicans but surrendered 146 points in Friday’s loss to the Heat. The club currently ranks sixth from the bottom in opponent scoring, allowing 123.7 points per game.
