Klutch Sports co-founder Rich Paul denied long-standing speculation that his agency has steered basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers, saying the belief “was never a thing.”
Speaking on the latest episode of his “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman, Paul addressed rumors that Klutch’s high-profile relationship with LeBron James gave the firm outsized influence inside the organization.
“We never ran the Lakers”
“I know people say we run the Lakers,” Paul said. “We never ran the Lakers. If I did, I would have been in on the ownership deal and taken some of that money.”
The agent added that while he enjoys “a great partnership” with the franchise, it is not as pervasive as critics suggest. “I don’t want that responsibility,” he emphasized.
The conversation stems from high-profile moves involving Klutch clients. Anthony Davis forced a trade to Los Angeles in 2019, and other Klutch players—such as Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Jarred Vanderbilt—have signed or extended deals with the club. Those transactions fueled the perception that Paul and James influence front-office decisions.
Ongoing success, lingering perception
Since James joined the Lakers in 2018, the partnership has yielded a 2020 NBA championship and kept the team in regular postseason contention. Despite Paul’s remarks, public belief that Klutch carries significant weight inside any James-led organization remains widespread.
Previous critique of Lakers culture
Paul has openly compared the Lakers’ organizational culture unfavorably to that of the Miami Heat, underscoring that his willingness to speak candidly extends beyond defending his agency’s role.
The Lakers, James and Klutch Sports continue pursuing another title as they navigate business and basketball narratives surrounding one of the league’s most scrutinized franchises.
