Philadelphia 76ers executive Prosper Karangwa is expected to stay with the organization despite recent interest from the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks, NBA insider Marc Stein reported Monday.
Karangwa, 48, serves as the 76ers’ vice president of player personnel. The Lakers received permission to interview him for one of two newly created assistant general manager positions but now anticipate he will remain in Philadelphia following the club’s appointment of Mike Gansey as president of basketball operations.
Los Angeles Adds One Assistant GM, Still Needs Another
The Lakers already filled one of the assistant GM roles by hiring former New Orleans Pelicans staffer Rohan Ramadas to oversee strategy and data systems. General manager Rob Pelinka said the team is “further build[ing] out our basketball operations resources,” adding that Ramadas’ “unique blend of career experiences and analytical expertise will further strengthen” the franchise’s data analytics and salary-cap efforts.
Karangwa’s Career Path
A four-year player at Siena College from 1999-2003, Karangwa continued his career overseas until 2010 before moving into scouting. He launched a scouting service to assist European clubs in identifying U.S. talent, joined the Orlando Magic as a scout in 2012 and advanced to director of scouting in 2016. Philadelphia hired him in 2020, and he has since helped construct both NBA and G League rosters.
With Ramadas in place and Karangwa poised to remain with the 76ers, the Lakers will continue searching for a second assistant general manager to focus on player personnel and draft evaluation as they prepare for a pivotal offseason.
