Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said the organization will fully respect LeBron James’ timeline and choice as the 41-year-old superstar considers whether to return for a record 24th NBA season.

Speaking at his annual end-of-season press conference, Pelinka noted that James—one of up to nine Lakers headed for free agency—has “given so much” to the franchise and deserves the space to decide his future.

“The first order of business is allowing him to spend the time he needs to decide what his next steps are,” Pelinka told reporters. “Of course, any team, including ours, would love to have LeBron James on their roster.”

The Lakers are projected to have significant salary-cap room to reshape the roster around Luka Doncic, but James’ contract value remains difficult to gauge. While he proved late in the regular season and during the playoffs that he can still excel in multiple roles, the franchise must balance his salary with the need to add complementary pieces.

After earlier indications that 2025-26 might be his final year in Los Angeles, interest in a reunion now appears mutual. James’ first decision, however, is whether he wants to play at age 42.

Head coach JJ Redick has publicly expressed a desire to keep the core of Doncic, James and Austin Reaves intact. Contract figures for James and Reaves will be critical as the Lakers attempt to construct a deeper, better-fitting roster.

The Lakers will wait on James’ verdict before moving forward with broader offseason plans.
