Newly acquired Los Angeles Lakers forward-center Sandro Mamukelashvili expects life to become easier alongside superstar Luka Doncic, saying the two have already begun discussing how to mesh on the court.
Speaking during his first media session with the club, the 25-year-old big man revealed that Doncic contacted him soon after the deal was completed.
“He said he’s very excited that I’m part of the team and he can’t wait to get to work,” Mamukelashvili told reporters. “I said, ‘I’m going to the gym right now to shoot a million corner threes to make sure I’m ready.’”
Mamukelashvili, who grew up in Europe the same year Doncic was rising through junior ranks, recalled frequently seeing the Slovenian guard top continental prospect lists. “I remember the rankings—he was always number one. Now, just being his teammate, it’s amazing, and I really do think he’s gonna make my life a lot easier,” he said.
The 6-foot-10 Georgian native joins Los Angeles after averaging 11.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 52.3% shooting and 38.9% from three-point range last season with the Toronto Raptors. Head coach JJ Redick is expected to use his versatility both as a stretch power forward and in small-ball lineups at center.
Mamukelashvili also noted that playing for the Lakers carries personal meaning. A lifelong admirer of Kobe Bryant, he sports a tattoo inspired by Bryant’s “Mamba Mentality,” which he said has guided his career.
The Lakers have not announced when Mamukelashvili and Doncic will begin on-court workouts, but the forward-center is already preparing to space the floor for his new All-NBA teammate.
