Los Angeles — LeBron James has chosen his next destination, agreeing to a two-year, $8 million free-agent deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to multiple reports.
The decision immediately raised questions about the status of his son, guard Bronny James, who is still under contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. Agent Rich Paul told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne that father and son “are not a package deal” and that there is no current plan or request for Bronny to be traded to Philadelphia.
LeBron informed the Lakers earlier this month that he would not return for what will be his 24th NBA season, fully aware that the move would separate him from his son on the court. The duo made league history last year as the first father and son to play in the same NBA game, even connecting on several alley-oop plays.
With LeBron now focused on chasing another championship in Philadelphia, Bronny, 21, will remain in Los Angeles, where he is expected to compete for regular rotation minutes. The arrangement sets up the possibility of the two facing each other for the first time when the Lakers and 76ers meet next season.
LeBron, 41, revealed on social media that he seriously considered retirement after the Lakers’ first-round playoff exit before opting to continue his career with Philadelphia.
