Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James said he will not rush a decision on his basketball future, explaining on the latest episode of his “Mind the Game” podcast that serious discussions about free agency will wait until late June or July.

The 41-year-old, who just completed his 23rd NBA season, becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer. James noted that he plans to take a family vacation after Memorial Day and will use the weeks that follow to assess whether he will return for a 24th season—and, if so, where.

“I haven’t really even thought about it too much,” James said. “I understand I’m a free agent and can control my own destiny, whether that’s being here with this franchise for the foreseeable future or going somewhere else. I’ll probably start to get a feel for my future in late June as free agency rolls into July, maybe even August.”

James emphasized that his decision will hinge on championship prospects. “Winning is most important,” the 22-time All-Star declared. “I’m not going anywhere that’s a start-over in Year 24.”

The Lakers have publicly stated they want James back, but his salary expectations could determine how quickly Los Angeles can fill out the rest of its roster. The team has significant cap space, yet that flexibility would narrow if James seeks a near-maximum contract.

James reiterated that he still feels capable of playing “at a high level” and contributing “so much to the game,” but acknowledged he has not set a firm timetable. Should he wait until August, the Lakers’ offseason planning would face added uncertainty.
