Lakers reportedly leaning toward a quiet offseason focused on retaining core players

The Los Angeles Lakers may enter the summer without the headline-grabbing moves many fans expect, according to league sources cited by NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin.

The NBA Finals will wrap up between June 13 and June 19, giving the front office a short window to chart a course around franchise star Luka Doncic. Los Angeles could open roughly $48 million in cap room by renouncing every free agent except guard Austin Reaves. However, team executives are said to be seriously considering an above-the-cap strategy that prioritizes keeping much of the current roster intact.

Cap approach under review

By retaining cap holds for LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton and others, the Lakers would preserve Bird rights and gain flexibility to outbid competitors for their own players. Operating above the cap would also allow use of the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, projected near $15 million, to target a single impact addition.

The relative thinness of the 2026 free-agent market strengthens the case for continuity. James, Reaves and Hachimura are already viewed as three of the top unrestricted names available this summer, reducing the likelihood of outside upgrades.

James silent on possible pay cut

One scenario that could expand spending power involves James accepting less than a maximum salary. Asked about that possibility, the veteran forward declined comment, saying his immediate focus is determining whether he is mentally and physically ready for another season.

Should trades fail to materialize, maintaining the status quo while adding a mid-level piece “may be the best option,” sources told NBC Sports.
