The Los Angeles Lakers continued their strong start to the Las Vegas Summer League on Saturday, cruising past the Dallas Mavericks behind a 34-point eruption from forward Arthur Kaluma.
Who: Arthur Kaluma, Los Angeles Lakers
What: Career-best 34 points on 11-for-16 shooting, including 6 three-pointers
When: Saturday night (Summer League, Las Vegas)
Where: Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas
How: Stepped in for sidelined first-round pick Cameron Carr (right thumb) and delivered a dominant 3-and-D performance
Kaluma Seizes Opportunity
The 22-year-old forward wasted no time asserting himself, connecting from deep early and often. “My game is 3-and-D,” Kaluma said after the win. “I lock up on defense, I hit open shots, and I got hot today.”
Growth Rooted in G League Experience
Kaluma spent last season with the South Bay Lakers in the NBA G League, a stint he credits for sharpening his edge. “The G can get grimy,” he noted. “Everybody’s fighting for a spot. That drive carried into Summer League and helped me work on my game.”
He added that a season of professional reps improved his footwork on defense and boosted his confidence from long range. “My shot feels good, and I understand the game a lot better now,” he said.
Making the Most of Summer League
The forward missed last year’s Summer League due to injury, making this week’s showcase his first chance to impress on the Vegas stage. “People come to Summer League for an opportunity,” Kaluma explained. “Being able to perform at this level has been amazing. All glory to God.”
With back-to-back blowout victories over the Oklahoma City Thunder and Mavericks, Los Angeles is 2-0 in Las Vegas. Kaluma’s breakout has already sparked discussion about whether the Lakers should offer him a two-way contract before another franchise makes a move.
