The Los Angeles Lakers do not share the widespread concern that pairing Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in the backcourt creates an insurmountable defensive weakness, according to an internal assessment reported by The Athletic.
A team source told the outlet that any defensive shortcomings can be mitigated “provided the Lakers address other needs on the wing and at the rim.”

Doncic and Reaves formed the league’s highest-scoring tandem during the 2024-25 season, consistently exploiting mismatches and displaying strong on-court chemistry. Their offensive output propelled Los Angeles through much of the regular season while the club maintained a respectable defensive ranking overall.

Reaves has long been known for drawing charges and playing with high energy, while Doncic showed noticeable improvement defensively this year, countering the perception that he is a liability.
