Former Los Angeles Lakers forward Trevor Ariza revealed that Kobe Bryant wasted no time mapping out a return to championship form after the team’s defeat in the 2008 NBA Finals.

Speaking on the “All The Smoke” podcast, Ariza said Bryant texted him within a week of the Game 6 loss to the Boston Celtics, promising to send “the blueprint” for the next season. “He told me, ‘I’m going to send you everything I need you to do to help me,’” Ariza recalled.

Ariza described a hostile scene in Boston—fans shaking the team bus and throwing objects—followed by a late-night meeting in Bryant’s hotel room where players discussed how to improve. Back in Los Angeles, Bryant’s follow-up message listed specific drills, workout times and joint sessions the two would complete throughout the summer.

The wing said he adhered to the plan “every day, twice a day,” work that translated into a pivotal role during the Lakers’ run to the 2009 NBA championship. Bryant’s demand for relentless preparation, Ariza added, defined the culture that lifted Los Angeles back to the top just one year after the Finals setback.

In a separate interview, retired Detroit Pistons guard Richard Hamilton also reflected on his long-standing friendship with Bryant, underscoring the late star’s influence on peers across the league.
