Julius Erving Says He Would Take LeBron James Over Kobe Bryant

NBA Hall of Famer Julius “Dr. J” Erving weighed in on one of basketball’s most persistent debates, saying he would pick LeBron James ahead of Kobe Bryant.

Asked by interviewer The Schmo to choose between the two Los Angeles Lakers legends, Erving replied, “I think LeBron is one-of-one. Kobe’s another sort of imitation of Michael Jordan. There’ve been plenty of imitations of Michael and Kobe and me and other people. But LeBron is like one of one, so I’ma give him his pick.

The comment touched on a common argument that Bryant closely mirrored Michael Jordan’s style, while James is viewed as a singular talent. Supporters of Bryant counter that no other player matched Jordan’s game as closely as Bryant did.

James, now in his 23rd NBA season, has long been praised for his rare blend of size, speed, strength, passing vision and basketball IQ. His unprecedented longevity keeps him among the league’s elite well into his late 30s.

Bryant’s résumé remains formidable. The five-time champion was renowned for his relentless competitiveness—popularized as the “Mamba Mentality”—and possessed a widely regarded all-around scoring arsenal. During his prime, he was also considered one of the NBA’s top perimeter defenders.

Erving’s remarks came days after six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan, a Southern California native, was asked to play “Start, Bench, Cut” with Bryant, James and Magic Johnson, highlighting how difficult it is for current players to rank three Lakers who routinely appear on lists of the NBA’s all-time top 10.
