Guard Collin Sexton said the prospect of nightly high-stakes competition drove his decision to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency.
“Honestly, I would say just opportunity,” Sexton explained when asked why he picked Los Angeles. “Opportunity to go out and win and be able to compete each and every night… every day they’re gonna be in the bright lights and every day they’re gonna have all eyes on them. But also, everyone’s gonna try to beat us and give us their best.”
Veteran scorer expected to boost bench production
The Lakers finished last season 29th in the NBA with only 29.3 points per game from their reserves. Sexton averaged 15.4 points in 68 appearances—46 of them off the bench—while splitting time between the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls. His scoring punch is projected to headline Los Angeles’s second unit and, if needed, slide into the starting lineup alongside lead guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
Playoff stage still awaits
Although he is entering his eighth NBA season, the 25-year-old has never appeared in a postseason game. He believes the Lakers’ championship expectations and national spotlight present the ideal environment to change that.
Kessler reports progress after shoulder surgery
Los Angeles’s other major offseason acquisition, center Walker Kessler, said his surgically repaired left shoulder is healing well. The big man was limited to five games last season because of a torn labrum.
Sexton now looks to translate his individual success into playoff victories as the Lakers aim to strengthen their bench and return to title contention.
