Charles Barkley Says LeBron James Should Finish Career With Cavaliers

NBA Hall of Famer and television analyst Charles Barkley believes LeBron James has only one sensible destination if he elects to play a 24th season. Appearing Monday on ESPN’s “Get Up,” Barkley said the four-time champion should opt out of his contract and rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“LeBron only has one play in my opinion, and that’s to go back to Cleveland,” Barkley told the program. “That’s his only smart, logical choice. Go back and finish his career with the Cavs. It’s a perfect fix.”

The 39-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star can become an unrestricted free agent this summer by declining his $51.4 million player option. Barkley argued that remaining in Los Angeles would leave James on a roster unable to contend in a deep Western Conference.

“It doesn’t do him any good to stay in L.A. because, No. 1, they’re not going to be competitive in the West,” Barkley said. “It’s time for the Lakers to turn the team over to Luka [Doncic]. They’re not going to compete with the Spurs, the Thunder or the Timberwolves with a 42-year-old guy.”

Barkley added that any decision to stay with the Lakers would be driven by off-court considerations. By contrast, he said, a return to Cleveland — where James started his career in 2003 and won the franchise’s first championship in 2016 — would immediately vault the Cavaliers to contender status. “The Cavs would probably be the favorite in the East,” Barkley said.

Eastern Conference Path Still Challenging

Even with James, the Cavaliers would face stiff competition. The New York Knicks are viewed as a rising power and could push for the 2026 NBA title, while the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers expect to have All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton back at full strength next season.

Reaves Wants James to Stay in Los Angeles

Lakers guard Austin Reaves, who has spent his entire three-year career alongside James, expressed hope that the 20-time All-Star remains in purple and gold. Reaves said he enjoys playing with James and wants the partnership to continue.

James has not yet announced whether he will exercise his player option or test free agency. The decision is expected to shape the offseason plans of the Lakers, Cavaliers and any other team that might pursue the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
